Forestation Plan
:::

How has the world changed

From 2000 through until 2005, the area of the world's surface covered by forest decreased at a rate of 7,300,000 hectares per year. That's equivalent to the area of two Taiwan islands!

The globe becomes warming gradually, and the warming effect leads to little difference of temperature between day and night, decrease of the amounts of daylight hours per year, and increase of rainfall intensity. Accordingly, drought, floods, and rainstorm become intensified that lead to increase of famine and sickness.

In order to slow down climate warming, forestation and re-forestation as a way of carbon sequestration in the atmosphere is becoming an increasingly important issue.

What can we do here in Taiwan?

  • Increase the area of green land in Taiwan / Build green living spaces
  • Co-operate with international energy policies / Contribute the benefits of carbon emission reduction in Taiwan
  • Construct a green and secure homeland / Create a healthy and energetic Taiwan
  • Protect all our green resources / Set up bio-diverse ecosystems
  • Build high quality recreation areas / Activate leisure industries to flourish

Build a safe, ecological, and high quality homeland

We've already made a start

1Increasing forestation

We've encouraged the landowners and tenants by provide subsidies to reforest the lands which conformed to the rules of regulations and directions, such as "Regulations of Awards and Assistance on Reforestation", "Operation Directions of Short-term Contractual Afforestation", and "Afforestation Operation Directions of Infertile Farmland Verified By Farming system Adjustment and Farmland Revitalization Program".

We've increased forestation on outlying islands to make these areas green and become more beautiful. Aimed at the odd pieces of land around the government and general offices, we've implemented forestation and back to the land management agencies after accomplished. By these ways, the environment of urban areas, the ecological landscape of towns and rural areas have been improved obviously.

2Establishing forest parks

Three forestation areas have been turned into large-scale forest parks, which are being developed together with related agriculture, urban and rural culture, community-building, and environmental education projects. The responsible agencies have also been developing diverse tourist and recreation activities. They are devoted to increasing people's options when it comes to outdoor leisure and excursions. By driving the development of forest tourism and recreation, they hope to create opportunities for green resource industries and leading to a redistribution of wealth and income to non-urban areas.

3Protecting the integrity of the 85 protected areas

  1. Reinforcing management of protected areas:
Evaluating the functions of the 76 existing protected areas and understanding of the current state and changes to the environment and biodiversity in the protected areas.
  2. Promoting community forestry:
By encouraging local communities to participate in biodiversity conservation and providing assistance to communities in building good lifestyles, allowing people to reap the dual benefits of both ecological conservation and industrial and economic development.

4Afforestation Tests, Monitoring and Surveys

In order to allow farmers and related forestry units to obtain a basal knowledge and information about forestation technologies and future utilization, we've surveyed the forestation lands and intend to develop a key forestation operation and management systems of major planting tree species.
